Child & Teenage Anxiety Is On The Rise
by Charles Beeson
Counselors, in both private and public schools, are seeing child & teenage anxiety in epedemic proportions. Kids, driven by high expectations, begin to crumble emotionally. The competitive pressures to excel and over-achieve, fuel the innovative mind-sets of many young families. The stresses created are beyond the coping skills of many teens.
The signs are often misdiagnosed as ADD (attention deficit disorder) and treatments can be devasting. Suicides, drug & alcohol use and sex, become the nightmare. The signs are often clouded or disregarded, as just test anxiety or exam anxiety.
The kids affected are usually 9 to 16 years of age and in grades 6 to 11. It’s happening throughout the country. It is very noticable near my office in: Huntsville, AL.
The Causes of Child & Teenage Anxiety
Child and Teen anxiety often begins with environmental stressful events. Significant changes, such as; moving, starting a new school, divorce, death and other life pressures can get it started.
These triggers add to the imbalanced feelings caused by the hormonal changes of puberty. When combined with the perfectionistic expectations of scholastic achievement… it can result in a variety of anxiety disorders. National statistics show that it affects about one out of ten teenagers (8 to 10%). Anxiety can run in familes with a genetic factor, causing a greater sensitivity to feelings of fear and worry.

It’s a behavioral problem that can be modified and treated with the right coaching and techniques. It is NORMAL for all children to exerience episodes of anxiety, in the “growing up”, process. But, when it becomes obvious that the problem isn’t going-away, help may be needed.

Conventional treatments are medication and a form of “talk therapy”, called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Medications can have negative side effects.
